Proper calibration helps the Hanna System measure pH and ORP accurately. Complete this process after initial installation and approximately once per month as part of regular Alpine PRO maintenance. Calibrate the pH reading before calibrating the ORP reading.
Step 1: Prepare for Calibration
Confirm that you have:
- Two pH 7.01 solution packets.
- Two pH 4.01 solution packets.
- Two 470 mV ORP/CL2 solution packets.
- The probe-port plug.
The Hanna System must already be installed, and the Alpine PRO must be filled with normal circulation established. Make sure the cold tub and Hanna controller are on before beginning calibration.
Step 2: Prepare the Probe
- Initial calibration: Leave the probe-port plug firmly installed and leave both control-board ball valves open. The valve handles should be parallel to the plumbing.
- Later recalibration: Turn off the cold tub, close both control-board ball valves, remove the installed probe and place its protective cap with storage fluid over the sensor as needed. Install the probe-port plug, reopen both valves, then power the cold tub back on and confirm normal circulation before calibrating.
Remove the protective cap from the probe only when you are ready to place the sensor in the first calibration solution.
Step 3: Calibrate with the pH 7.01 Solution
- Press the menu button on the Hanna controller and use the down arrow to highlight the pH options.
- Open the first pH 7.01 packet.
- Place the probe in the solution and swirl it gently so the sensor is completely covered and rinsed.
- Remove the probe and discard the used packet.
- Open the second pH 7.01 packet and place the probe in the solution.
- Press CAL on the controller.
- Leave the probe in the solution until the controller indicates that the reading is stable, then press CFM.
Step 4: Calibrate with the pH 4.01 Solution
- Open the first pH 4.01 packet.
- Place the probe in the solution and swirl it gently to rinse the sensor.
- Remove the probe and discard the used packet.
- Open the second pH 4.01 packet and place the probe in the solution.
- Leave the probe in the solution until the controller indicates that the reading is stable.
- Press CFM to complete the pH calibration.
Discard all used pH calibration packets after the calibration is complete.
Step 5: Calibrate the ORP/CL2 Reading
- Open the first 470 mV ORP/CL2 solution packet.
- Place the probe in the solution and swirl it gently to rinse the sensor.
- Remove the probe and discard the used packet.
- Open the second 470 mV ORP/CL2 packet and place the probe in the solution.
- Open the ORP options and press CAL.
- Leave the probe in the solution until the controller indicates that the reading is stable, then press CFM.
Discard all used ORP/CL2 calibration packets after the calibration is complete.
Step 6: Install the Calibrated Probe
- Turn off the cold tub.
- Close both control-board ball valves. The valve handles should be perpendicular to the plumbing when closed.
- Unscrew the plug from the probe port. A small amount of residual water may drain from the plumbing.
- Thread the calibrated probe into the port until it is fully seated and snug.
- Reopen both ball valves. The valve handles should be parallel to the plumbing when open.
- Inspect the probe connection and surrounding plumbing for leaks.
Step 7: Fill the Chemical Tanks
- Fill the left tank with the approved acid according to the chemical label.
- Fully close the left tank lid immediately after filling it.
- Fill the right tank with the approved liquid chlorine according to the chemical label.
- Fully close the right tank lid immediately after filling it.
Do not open both chemical tanks at the same time, and do not interchange the containers, tubing or tank positions.
Step 8: Enable Automatic Dosing
- Power up the cold tub and confirm that the water is circulating.
- Press the menu button on the Hanna controller.
- Highlight Acid Pump and select Auto using the buttons directly below the screen.
- Highlight CL2 PUMP and select Auto using the buttons directly below the screen.
- Reinstall and secure the protective shroud using the thumb screws.
After start-up, check the pH with a separate water test. The automatic dosing system lowers pH as needed but does not raise it, so a pH increaser may be required if the pH is below the recommended range.
Step 9: Recalibrate the System Regularly
Recalibrate the probe approximately once per month to help ensure accurate readings.
Calibration does not replace routine manual water testing, chemical-tank inspection or other maintenance required by the Alpine PRO owner’s manual and applicable health regulations.
